Once upon a time, there was a beautiful peaceful kingdom, called Mintin Island Kingdom ruled by a very kind old king. One day a deep sadness covering the whole kingdom caused by the ill of the queen. She then passed away after suffering her illness for days. The old king was very sad.
On a fine day he summoned his loyal vizier. The vizier wondered asked the king, “You're Majesty, is there anything that I can help you?” “Vizier, I have been thinking to take a rest and give this throne to someone right. I have two sons who can be the successors of me to rule this kingdom.” “It is at discretionyour of you to decide, You're Majesty. I can only be your loyal vizier and do whatever your discretion is.” Acually the king has two sons, Dragon and Crocodile. They were both then enthroned as kings of the kingdom by the old king. The old king left the kingdom and wandered to fill his empty heart after the death of the queen. After the king left, these two brothers ruled the kingdom as twin kings. However, it is impossible for these siblings to rule the kingdom. Dragon and Crocodile were very great warriors. But, unfortunately Dragon was a bad person. Somehow Crocodile was the good one. Disputes regarding the kingdom policies made by the twin kings were getting worse. It came to a bad end. The civil war! Battle between Dragon troops and Crocodile’s lasted in very bad situation. The kingdom became unrest and separated in two. The old king had a nightmare in his sleep one day. Suddenly he ordered the vizier to turn the fleet back to the Mintin Island Kingdom. “I have a bad feeling about our kingdom!” he said to the vizier, “I have made a big mistake by appointing them as kings. Their visions in ruling our kingdom are surely very different.” The royal fleet then left at once. At their arrival, the old king found the kingdom destroyed very badly caused by a fierce war. He was very angry and summoned his sons, Dragon and Crocodile before him. “Do you both know what you have done to our kingdom? Our beloved land? Look at the poor people, hungry caused by this useless war?” Dragon and Crocodile could only see the ground, afraid to look at their father in the eye. “From now on,” the old king said in high tone, “Dragon, you will be a footed snake with firing mouth. To pay your mistakes, you must stay along the Kapuas River to guard the river from Bantilung mushroom.” “Crocodile, even you have fewer mistakes but you still must receive punishment as a river animal with sharp teeth and long mouth. Stay here and guard Mintin Island Kingdom,” he continued. Soon after he finished, the sky became dark and lightning crossed over. Suddenly Dragon and Crocodile turned into a dragon and a crocodile. They are now believed as the keeper of Mintin Island and Kapuas River. (Central Kalimantan Folk Tale) |
