Once upon a time there was a village chief who ruled the village in Bangka Island. His name is Pak* Raje. He was very rich but so mean. He has an employee who he had him to watch over his rice field. The employee's name was Si Penyumpit**. This young man had to watch over the rice field from wildboars. His late father owed some money from Pak Raje and couldn't pay it until the day he died. Si Penyumpit offered himself to keep Pak Raje's rice field from the wildboars in order to pay his father's debt. Pak Raje knew that those wildboars could still trespass his rice field so he can force Si Penyumpit to pay him money for the damage. Si Penyumpit succeeded protecting the rice field from the wildboars for six days and six nights. But on the seventh day there was a wildboar trespass the rice field. He blew his blowpipe and hit the wildboar's leg. It suddenly ran away in painful and bloody leg. Si Penyumpit followed it to find out where the wildboars home is. In the forest, the wildboar suddenly turned into a beautiful girl. Si Penyumpit was very amazed. He showed himself and apologized. The beautiful girl introduced herself as Putri Malam (The Night Princess). Si Penyumpit offered to cure her wound. Carefully he pulled out the dart and covered the wound with some herbal medicine he found in the forest. Later in the morning, the princess was cured and she can walk like before. Her mother, Queen of The Dark Forest was very thankful and gave him a bundle of several kinds of spice. "Don't open it before you get home young man," she told Si Penyumpit. Afterwards he came home and when he got home he opened the bundle. How delighted he was when he found that the bundle had turned into gold, diamonds and rubies. He became very rich since that time. He then could pay his father's debt to Pak Raje and no longer work for him. He also generously revealed the secret of his wealth. Hearing the story, Pak Raje was very jealous. He intended to try what Si Penyumpit had done. One night Pak Raje caught a wildboar and shot him with a blowpipe. He then followed the wildboar into the forest. There he was unfortunately attacked by herd of wildboars and died. Those wildboars knew that he had a bad intention. The daughter of Pak Raje in deepful sad told Si Penyumpit that her father died attacked by wildboars. Si Penyumpit kindly tried to help her. He prayed for God's help to make Pak Raje alive. Eventually his prayer was granted. Pak Raje was alive. He thanked Si Penyumpit and apologized of what he had done to him. As his gratitute, he asked Si Penyumpit to marry his daughter. After the marriage, Si Penyumpit appointed to be the new village chief replacing the old Pak Raje. (Sumateran Folk Tale) * Pak = Mister (in Indonesian) ** Si Penyumpit = The blowpiper |
